OTTAWA–There’s something new to enjoy at the Old Depot Museum in Ottawa. It’s an exhibit about the Battle of Black Jack. The battle is considered by many to be the first real battle of the Civil War, and it was an effort to capture John Brown and his followers. Nearly half of Brown’s men were from Franklin County. The battle didn’t go as expected…it ended with a complete victory for Brown, which saw him capturing the leader of the opposing forces, Henry Clay Pate of Westport.
