MANHATTAN — This is Lightning Safety Awareness Week. And state climatologist Mary Knapp at Kansas State University is using the week to ponder a mystery – ball lightning. Ball lightning tends to be spherical and about the size of an orange and can last from seconds to minutes, she said. In past years, researchers and scientists considered ball lightning to be optical illusions, she said. However, ball lightning has left scorched marks and some have taken photos of the phenomena, she said. If you’ve had an experience with ball lightning, she’d like to hear from you. You can reach her through the county Extension office.
