OTTAWA — The county must solve a mystery, then decide if there’s a grave situation. County administrator Lisa Johnson told county commissioners Wednesday, she’s received a letter about the discovery of gravestones and graves near Lane. She said before the county can respond, she’ll have to see if the area has been dedicated as a cemetery, but forgotten, or if they are on private property. If the area is on private property, under Kansas law, the graves come under the authority of the county clerk. If the site is a cemetery, it can be turned over to a township or cemetery district. There have been several such situations before, she said.
