CHESTERFIELD, Mo. — Soybean rust has been found in soybeans for the first time this year. The United Soybean Board said this year’s first case was found in southern Texas.
Soybean rust have been found in a few southern states until the Texas confirmation, had infected kudzu vines. New Jersey soybean farmer Rick Stern is a member of the USB and he says it’s not cheerful news for soybean farmers. The disease, which has shown up in recent years in the south and which has slowly expanded its range in the U.S., has devastated other countries’ soybean crops, he said. The USB and other groups are monitoring the situations and offering recommendations on when to spray individual fields, he said. Soybeans are the major cash crop for Franklin County.
