OTTAWA – The Franklin County Health Department is offering free HIV testing today. The testing is part of a national campaign to get more people tested, said Midge Ransom, county health director. About 1 million people in the U.S. has HIV or AIDS but one in five people don’t know they have it, she said. As publicity has wa=ted about HIV and AIDS, fewer people are protecting themselves or indulging in high-risk behavior, including sharing drug needles or unprotected sex with multiple partners, she said. Teens are one of the largest segments of people with HIV but one of the fastest-growing segments of people who have HIV or AIDS are seniors, she said. Ransom said her department will use a new test today that takes about 20 minutes.
