OTTAWA — It’s in the county and it’s owned by the county, but county is seeking the city’s permission to expand the county’s construction and demolition landfill on Osborne Terrace northeast of Ottawa. Because the transfer station and landfill is now in the city’s urban growth area, the city must give its approval to the expansion. The Ottawa Planning Commission looked at the expansion Wednesday. Assistant city planner Tom Yahl said the planning staff recommends approval as long as the county gets the permission for the expansion from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. That’s a process that will take at least a year, said county planner Larry Walrod. The planners will have a public hearing on the landfill expansion July 14. Yahl said the city has received calls and comments about the proposal and he said he expects some opponents will show up at the hearing.
