OTTAWA — Garden web worms are making inroads into Franklin County’s premiere farm cash crop, soybeans, in the southern part of the county. Frontier Extension ag agent Darren Hibdon said producers should start looking for the small worms now. The infestations are still fairly spotty but some bean fields have been heavily infested and require treatement, he said. Producers should walk their fields and look for the small worms, he said. If there are two to three worms per linear foot, it’s a good time to treat against them, he said. The worms can do serious damage to beans, he said. If farmers do spray their fields, they should be on the look out for re-infestations every two to three weeks thereafter, he said.
