INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Two children remain hospitalized from Saturday morning’s church bus crash on I-35 near Ottawa. Both should fully recover, said Rev. Carl Herbster, Tri-City Ministries, Independence, Mo. One child has a broken hip and the other has a compression fracture in the back, he said. Seven other children were injured when the bus rolled over but were treated and released from area hospitals and are back with their families, Herbster said. The bus, a converted school bus, was going to Independence with 29 people from the Amazing Grace church camp near Ottawa when the crash occurred. The Kansas Highway Patrol said the driver, Ann Marie King, 42, Lees Summit, Mo., lost control of the bus, it went into the median as tipped over on its side as it came out of the media. Herbster said the cause of the accident may be mechanical, but is still under investigation. Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry said that after the accident, the uninjured children were hosted at the sheriff’s department until they could be picked up by their families. Herbster asked that people pray for the recovery of the hospitalized children and their families, and the remaining children and adults on the bus.
