OTTAWA — Members of the Ottawa Youth in Government showed off a new rain garden at Kanza Park Tuesday and they say this weekend’s heavy rains show that it works. The group had a short ceremony for the rain garden which is along 15th Street. Zach George, member of Youth in Government, said rain gardens are designed to help prevent stormwater runoff and to filter water. This rain garden has shown it works, he said. The rain garden, made of native grasses and wildflowers, was built at a point where where there was frequent flooding and standing water in the park, he said. During last weekend’s heavy storms, George said he went to check the rain garden and it had soaked up the excess water, doing it was designed to do. The group received a federal Targeted Watershed Grant to build the rain garden and 100 rain barrels as part of its project to improve water quality and the environment in Ottawa.
