OTTAWA — Other law enforcement agencies are helping the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department deal with the death of Deputy Samuel Smith, who was killed last week in a traffic accident. Smith’s funeral is Friday morning at 10 the Ottawa University Chapel. Sheriff Jeff Curry said 300 to 500 law officers could be among the mourners. Police Chief Dennis Butler said Ottawa police officers will cover the county Friday morning during services for Smith. Douglas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Lewis is serving as Curry’s public information officer this week. Knowing the stress of handling the death of a deputy, Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern met Curry last weekend and offered his department’s support and services, Lewis said.
