BLUE VALLEY — The Kansas Sierra Club plans to stage a protest before a public hearing in Johnson County on a controversial proposal to build a new coal-burning power plant near Garden City. The Kansas Department of Health of Environment is holding a public hearing this afternoon at 2 at Blue Valley Northwest High School near Stilwell about Sunflower Eectric’s proposal to build the giant power plant in western Kansas. The Sierra Club’s Stephanie Cole said a rally against the proposal will be before the hearing at 1:30 at Blue Valley Northwest High School. Alternative energy activist Bruce Nilles, named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 100 People Who are Changing America, will speak at the rally.
