WASHINGTON — Democratic and Republican farm-state senators are trying to add the Harkin-Lugar Amendment to an energy bill put together by Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid. The Harkin-Lugar Amendment aims to boost ethanol production by requiring new vehicles to be Flex-Fuel to burn higher percentages of ethanol in gas, require the use of blender fuel pumps at gas stations that would automatically blend several percentages of ethanol into gasoline and changes in federal tax rules regarding ethanol. The Senate begins debate today on the energy bill.
