OTTAWA — Ottawa Main Street will handle the effort to save two wooden chain-saw statues on the courthouse lawn, county commissioners decided. The statues are starting to deteriorate and will decay without repairs. Retired architect and restoration expert Bob Marsh met with county commissioners Monday and he told them Main Street originally paid for the sculptures of historical figures Tauy Jones and George Washburn. The organization didn’t really plan for the future of the sculptures and basically passed the responsibility to the county, he said. However, Main Street is willing to conduct a fund-raiser and handle the restoration project and maintenance of them, he said. The sculptures will be restored and returned to the courthouse lawn, Marsh said. Commissioners heard a rival presentation for saving the statues from Joa Carter of Ottawa. They asked Carter and Main Street to work together.
