GARNETT–The effort to turn the former Garnett National Guard Armory into a recreational center has gotten a major boost. A charitable foundation known as the Goppert Foundation…which is affiliated with Garnett State Savings Bank….has made a donation of 131 thousand dollars. That’s half of the estimated $262,000 needed to complete a renovation of the structure. City officials want to equip the building with a sports court, track, batting cages and exercise equipment. No tax money will be used for the project. City Manager Joyce Martin says the project is to be paid for with membership fees, grants and donations. Garnett recently became affiliated with the Greater Kansas City Charitable Foundation, which will accept tax exempt donations to be used for the Rec Center and other city projects.
