OTTAWA — The Ottawa City Commission took no action on a list of proposed cuts offered by city staff to reduce the impact of a property tax increase for next year. Earlier, commissioners balked at a proposal that would have raised city taxes by 1.76 mills. But they backed away from a proposal to hold the increase to less than 1 mill when they received objections to trimming the funding next year for such community activities as the city band, Ottawa Main Street, the Prairie Paws animal shelter and for economic development. City manager Richard Nienstedt said there’s no hurry for commissioners to decide how they want to cut. The most recent list has cuts of about $49,000 from next year’s budget. The sharpest cuts for next year would be in streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters; and for demolishing condemned buildings.
