OTTAWA — Franklin County Deputy Samuel Smith has been awarded the American Police Hall of Fame Medal of Honor posthumously. Sheriff Jeff Curry said the award and a plaque, and other awards will be presented to his mother, Katie Smith, at next Wednesday’s Franklin County Commission meeting. Smith was killed last month in a traffic accident near Williamsburg while responding to an emergency call. He is the only Franklin County deputy to die in the line of duty.
