GARNETT — Almost 12 years after the city of Garnett began collecting a half-cent sales tax for a library renovation and art gallery, new ball complex and street improvements; the revenue has surpassed expectations. The Anderson County Review reports that the special city sales tax has generated nearly $2.7 million since then. Over the years, the state has increased its sales tax and the county added a sales tax to pay part of the costs of the new county law enforcement center. Garnett’s total sales tax is 8.3 percent. City manager Joyce Martin said the sales tax collections have allowed the city to take care of important street projects that could not have been done otherwise.
