GARNETT — The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has agreed with the city of Garnett in a recent debate over fishing access to city lakes – especially the popular Lake Garnett on the north edge of the city. Fishing enthusiasts have complained that the city schedules too many events at or on Lake Farnett, such as water-skiing tournaments and boat and go-kart races. All the events held at the lake this summer made it difficult for them to fish at the lake. They said that the city receives money from the state because it is part of a special fisheries program. The state frowns on restrictions on fishing at lakes in the program. Anglers said that all the other special events at Lake Garnett violate the agreement. However, city manager Joyce Martin told the Anderson County Review that Wildlife and Parks secretary Mike Hayden has ruled that as long as anglers have access to the shoreline and are not restricted from using the boat ramps, the city isn’t in violation of the special program guidelines. However, she said she would look at the scheduling.
