OTTAWA – The Franklin County Commission has declared Saturday – the anniversary of 9-11 – as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The proclamation is part of a national effort to make Sept. 11 a day in which volunteers do community service to honor the day, Lisa Rivers, Ottawa Volunteer Center director, said. The teens of the Ottawa Youth in Government and Youth Action Council will run a food booth at the Power of the Past Saturday as a way to honor a former member, Franklin County Deputy Sam Smith, who died in the line of duty earlier this year, Rivers said. Law officers and their families will be offered free food, she said. Otherwise, food sales will be used for a Sam Smith Memorial Scholarship, she said. The teens will also offer free baby-sitting to law enforcement families, she said.
