MANHATTAN — For those folks sneezing because of ragweed they can’t wait. For those gardeners squeezing out a few more tomatoes, it’s a dreaded date. It’s the first freeze. Now that fall arrives on Wednesday, state climatologist Mary Knapp said people are thinking about when we’ll see our first freeze. Knapp said the date of the first freeze varies greatly. The average frost date in northwest Kansas occurs during the last week of September but tends to be a month later in southeast Kansas, she said.
