OTTAWA — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to start repairs on two bridges in Franklin County beginning Tuesday. The bridges are on K-68 over the Marais des Cygnes River west of Ottawa, and on the southbound lanes of I-35 approximately three miles northeast of U.S. 59 and K-68. KDOT said Mill Valley Construction, Shawnee Mission; will replace the expansion joints on each bridge. An expansion joint is a device that allows the bridge deck to expand and contract according to changes in temperature, KDOT said. Traffic on the K-68 bridge will be one lane and there will be an automatic traffic signal directing traffic through the bridge project. Motorists can expect brief delays. One lane on the I-35 bridge will be closed each way but isn’t expected to cause major delays. KDOT reminded drivers to exercise caution around highway construction zones and “Give ‘Em a Brake!”
