GARNETT — The city of Garnett will likely hire an engineering consultant to make a full inspection of the Lake Garnett dam. City manager Joyce Martin told the Anderson County Review that she’s concerned about the discovering of a large crack in pavement on the road over the dam. The crack has raised pavement about an inch and a half, she said. However, an engineer who examined the pavement crack has said the dam is not in immediate danger, but needs repairs soon, she said. City commissioners will discuss a contract for an engineering inspection soon. The dam and 55-acre Lake Garnett were built in the 1930s as a part of the Great Depression-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. The road around the lake was used for the famous Lake Garnett Grand Prix sports car road races and is still used for go-kart races.
