GARNETT — The problem with red foxes in Garnett began when someone added chicken to the menu. A Garnett man says red foxes have been killing his chickens on his property the edge of the city. Garnett Police animal control officer Troy Brubaker is the city’s fox hunter and he told the Anderson County Review that red foxes are common inside the city and around Lake Garnett. Normally, the foxes don’t cause problems, he said. Red foxes tend to roam and hunt at night, eating rodents, rabbits, birds and small game, as well as any available garbage or pet food, he said. Foxes have been known to kill cats, so cat owners shouldn’t to let their pets out after dark, he said. Brubaker said foxes are smart and he said the ones attacking the chickens aren’t easily trapped. He said he may have to kill them.
