OTTAWA – At next week’s meeting, Ottawa city commissioners will declare Oct. 4-10 as Fire Prevention Week in Ottawa. Several events will focus on fire safety. But city manager Richard Nienstedt said there’s more to celebrate than fire safety. An insurance rating group recently lower the city’s fire rating, which he says is something to celebrate. The fire rating is the lowest it has ever been – lower is better – and reflects the quality of Ottawa Fire Department and several water system improvements made over the year, he said. The lower fire rating should translate into lower residential and commercial insurance rates, he said. Property owners should make a point of telling their insurance companies about the lower rating, he said.
