LAWRENCE — The Douglas County Sheriff’s office has partnered with the Lawrence Pilot Club to start Project Lifesaver in Douglas County. They are introducing the program at a town hall meeting Monday evening at 6 at the Lawrence Public Library. Sheriff Ken McGovern and Pilot Club members will be on hand to explain the program, which trains and equips emergency response agencies with equipment designed to track and rescue those with cognitive conditions who tend to wander, including those with Alzheimer’s, autism, Down syndrome and dementia. Clients enrolled in the service will wear a wrist-watch-sized radio transmitter on the wrist or ankle. The transmitter constantly emits a radio frequency signal, which can be tracked regardless of where the person has wandered. When someone goes missing, the caregiver calls 911 and sheriff’s deputies are dispatched to the area and use electronic radio tracking equipment.
