LAWRENCE–Five Douglas County bridges are scheduled to be replaced in the next five years. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the projects will cost over $400 million, and fall under the T-WORKS transportation program. The program aims to preserve the state’s roads, with the majority aimed at replacing bridges. The bridges aimed to be replaced are the bridge on 23rd Street in Lawrence near the Haskell Rail Trail and Learnard Avenue, a bridge on U.S. Highway 59 over the Wakarusa River just south of Lawrence, a bridge on U.S.-56 that spans Tauy Creek in Baldwin, and two other bridges over the Tauy Creek  drainage area just west of Baldwin.
