TOPEKA — Kansas transportation secretary Deb Miller says engineering work will begin on replacing several bridges in the state, including some in the area. The work is for design only and won’t be funded for another four or five years, she said. Under the T-Works transportation program passed this year by the Kansas Legislature in May, preservation work was given top priority. Miller said T-Works seeks to meet all of the state’s road and bridge preservation needs over the next 10 years. Among the bridges being considered for replacement, the Marais des Cygnes Rver bridge on K-68 east of Richter and west of Ottawa. Other bridges include the Pottawatomie Creek bridge on U.S. 59 north of Garnett, a bridge on K-31 near Harris in Anderson County, the bridge on K268 that goes over the abandoned Missouri Pacific Railroad near Vassar, and a bridge on U.S. 59 in Douglas County but just north of the Franklin County line.
