OTTAWA – The Ottawa Fire Department has received a Life Safety Achievement Award for 2009 from the Residential Fire Safety Institute. The Ottawa Fire Department is one of 85 departments in the United States to receive thE award. The Life Safety Achievement Award has been given to departments that cut fire deaths or have no fire deaths and have effective fire prevention programs. Ottawa had no fire deaths last year. The department conducted 850 fire safety inspections of businesses, stores and public buildings and made 120 public fire education presentations, said Capt. Dennis Nowatzke.
