GARNETT — The Kansas Corn Growers and Kansas Grain Sorghum associations offices have been subpoenaed by attorneys who are involved in a federal lawsuit in Illinois against the major manufacturer of atrazine. Sue Schulte of the Kansas grain offices, which are based in Garnett, said the subpoenas are a form of harassment because the offices have been vocal in defending farmers’ use of atrazine. The offices’ advocacy for atrazine has no bearing on the legal case, she said. Atrazine is a major herbicide used by grain farmers. Supporters say atrazine is a safe and inexpensive way to control weeds. Several cities and water districts, including some from Kansas, are suing the atrazine maker, saying that atrazine has polluted their sources of water.
