OTTAWA — Prosecutors Heather Jones and James Ward rested their case against Roger Shaw of Wellsville Wednesday afternoon. Shaw has been charged with involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol in the traffic death of 21-year-old motorcyclist Aaron Kichler of Ottawa last year near Wellsville. Wednesday’s testimony included Olathe accident reconstruction expert Steve McKinzie, who said that Kichler was driving slightly less than the 55-mile-an-hour speed limit on Shawnee Road when the accident occurred. McKinzie said he based his conclusions in part on motorcycle skid marks made by Aaron Kichler’s brother, who was riding with him when the accident occurred. Shaw’s attorneys plan to present an expert today who is expected to say that the motorcyclists were going much faster. Also, a Kansas Bureau of Investigation lab technician testified that Shaw’s blood-alcohol content was .11, which is above the state’s .08 limit for drunken driving.
