TOPEKA — Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, Kansas adjutant general, said he will retire in January after seven years in the position. His retirement is effective at the end of Gov. Mark Parkinson’s term. Bunting was appointed in January 2004 by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. He has served 32 years in the military, beginning his career in the Kansas National Fuard in 1978. His tenure has been marked by a series of challenges and crises, including several deployments of Guard members to the Middle East, Africa and the former Yugoslavia; the Greensburg tornado, severe floods and winter storms; and last year’s steep budget cuts in which the Guard closed 18 of 56 armories across the state. Bunting also developed the Great Plains Joint Training Center and Crisis City in Salina, and the Kansas Safe and Prepared Schools program, the Eisenhower Center for Homeland Security Studies, and the Kansas Intelligence Fusion Center.
