OSAWATOMIE — It was a thousand cranes and a thousand prayers for a Paola second grader. The Osawatomie Journal reported that 10-year-old Emily Benton of Osawatomie asked several people to fold 1,000 origami paper cranes at the Osawatomie YMCA for Sadie Olsen of Paola who has been hospitalized for Rasmussen’s syndrome. Emily said every time you make a crane out of a square of paper, you’re supposed to say a prayer. The idea is based on a story involving a girl from Hiroshima dying from radiation sickness who tries to fold a thousand cranes. Emily reached her goal but is asking people to help fold another thousand cranes for Sadie.
