ATACAMA DESERT, Chile — An Osawatomie native got a front-row seat at a recent drama that transfixed the world — the safe rescue of 33 miners in Chile. Peter Murphy Lewis teaches at the University of Chile but was at the mine because a TV crew from ABC Mews needed a translator and fixer to get them to the mine and to find people for them to interview during the rescue. He called it a life-changing experience. He told the Osawatomie Journal that he cried along with the family members watching during the rescue of the first miner. As the miners were being rescued, their family members stayed at the mine to be with other families, he said. Lewis also said he came away from the event with a new appreciation for the media and their determination confirm facts about the people they interviewed.
