GARNETT — A financial analysis of the Anderson County jail by the Anderson County Review shows that the jail hasn’t generated the revenue that backers had hoped. The Review reported that the revenue generated by housing prisoners from other counties hasn’t covered the new jail’s operating costs. The county had hoped to house a significant number of inmates from Johnson County but that county opened a new facility and hasn’t shipped any inmates to since January. However, head jailer Bob Wedel said the number of out-of-county inmates has steadily increased. He also said that the previous 1929-era jail had multiple safety issues and Anderson County faced the prospect of housing inmates in other counties instead. Sheriff Scott Brownrigg said he believes most people in the county understand the need for the new facility and are pleased with the way it turned out.
