TOPEKA — Kansas securities commissioner Marc Wilson said if you’ve been laid off, you could be a target for scam artists. Con artists know that when people leave their jobs, they may receive a lump sum severance and have the discretion to transfer retirement savings into other investments, and that makes them a target for well-heeled crooks, he said. Scammers are fishing for out-of-work Kansans and selling them worthless investment scams, he said. One Johnson County man, Mark Mead, has pleaded guilty recently to one count of securities fraud, Wilson said.
