GARNETT — Garnett’s Veterans Day event on Thursday will honor 98-year-old D-Day survivor Willis Henderson of Garnett. He is the last remaining D-Day survivor in Anderson County. At 30, Henderson was one of the older draftees during World War II. He served in a combat engineer unit that landed on Omaha Beach. He rode into the beach on landing craft full of high explosive. Henderson related his experience on D-Day on an earlier Community Perspective, the Sunday public affairs program by KOFO News. VFW commander Steve Newland told the Anderson County Review that the post plans to recognize Henderson, his health permitting, during Thursday’s Veterans Day ceremony Thursday morning at 10:30 at Anderson County Junior-Senior High School.
