OTTAWA — When he meets with area legislators next week, Ottawa school Supt. Dean Katt said he’ll press for changes in state law that makes it easier to give time-out to parents of truant students. Now, if a parent doesn’t care if his or her students don’t go to school, there are few options for school officials. Katt said he’s looking for a fix that would give county attorneys more power to put the heat on laggard parents. Katt also said he’d like to repeal a law that allows parents to sign papers allowing students to drop out of school at 16. School, city and county officials will meet with legislators Tuesday evening to discuss likely issues for the next legislative session.
