LAWRENCE — While many college instructors think cell phones are a no-no in class, Kansas University journalism instructor Simran Sethi wants her students to bring cell phones to her Diversity in Media class. Her students are using their cell phones to text as part of their research into how different types of people use social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Rebecca Harsch of Lyndon is one of those students in the class who must regularly use Facebook and Twitter as part of the class. People of color, particularly African Americans, are skipping the Internet and computers and use their cell phones instead to take part in social media, creating a new way of telling stories in depth, Sethi said.
