GARNETT — Garnett city leaders agree a national boat race at the Cedar Valley Reservoir next summer might be a good thing. They also agree that a big problem is the $5,000 tab that would be the city’s share of the cost of the race. The Anderson County Review reported that would cover half of the cost. Speed boat race organizer Vernon Barfield, Wellsville, said the race could bring 35 to 40 racing teams and 3,000 to 5,000 people to Garnett. Barfield organized a smaller regional race at the smaller Lake Garnett last summer. However, commissioners say they aren’t against the race but it would be hard to come up with the money. They referred Barfield to the city’s tourism committee. The tourism committee oversees a motel guest-tax fund. Barfield has filled out an application to request funds through from the tourism committee and plans to approach local groups.
