GARNETT — Anderson County department heads are recommending that the county commission raise Sheriff Scot Brownrigg’s salary. Brownrigg told the Anderson County Review that he’s uncomfortable with asking for a pay raise but wants what is fair. Brownrigg’s salary is among the lowest in the region and is lower than sheriffs in counties that are about the same size as Anderson County, the Review reported. Brownrigg’s salary about $39,000 per year, or two-thirds of the state average for sheriffs. The salaries of other county department heads are below the state average but they have declined pay hikes in recent years but they said Brownrigg’s is much lower and needs to be increased. County Commissioner Gene Highberger said commissioners will consider the request when they review county employees’ salaries in January. Undersheriff Tom Laiter is a military reservist and will be deployed to Africa for about 14 months, and that could free up funds for a pay hike for Brownrigg.
