KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Star reported that a federal grand jury has been investigating whether there was a conspiracy in the murder of Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller. The Star reported the jury and federal agents have questioned people who knew Scott Roeder, who was convicted of shooting Tiller to death while he was an usher at his church in Wichita last year. Roeder was arrested along I-35 just outside Franklin County. The investigation occurs at a time when violence against abortion clinics and their staffers are escalating. Abortion-rights advocates have been pressing the U.S. justice department to investigate the possible existence of a network of anti-abortion extremists involved in clinic-related violence, including the murder of Tiller. Last month, a North Carolina man agreed to a federal plea bargain that he provided details on explosives to someone he thought was going to bomb a North Carolina abortion clinic. That person was a confidential informant.
