WICHITA — Surgery went well for Garfield third-grade teacher Katie Gardner and she is recovering this morning from injuries she received from a traffic accident near Newton this weekend, her family and friends said. Friends have updated her Facebook page and say Gardner received a broken leg and arm, a partial puncture of her lung and injuries to her spleen and internal organs from the head-on crash. Her family said she will go back into surgery for about eight hours Wednesday at Wesley Medical Center in Wwichita. Rodney and Janet Stevens of Shawnee were killed when their vehicle crossed the center line of U.S. 50 and hit Gardner’s car head-on near Walton, northeast of Newton.
