WICHITA– A Garfield school third grade teacher had a successful surgery yesterday. Kathyrn Gardner, 26, underwent surgery to work on her wrist and shoulder. According to her Facebook page, her wrist was worked on for three hours, which doctors placed one plate and nine screws. For her shoulder, a plate was put in with eight screws. The doctors of Wesley Medical Center in Wichita said that Gardner will have full range of motion in the shoulder. However, her elbow will not be able to be fully straight but she will be able to bend it. The next step for Gardner is to determine if she has Pneumonia in her lungs. She will remain on a respirator and could start therapy on her shoulder today. Gardner’s vehicle was hit head-on by Rodney Stevens, 62, of Shawnee in Newton on Sunday. Stevens and a passenger, Janet Stevens, 63, of Shawnee, were killed.
