OTTAWA — Franklin County commissioners say they intend to call Sheriff Jeff Curry on the carpet for the way he handled the purchase of a new camera and security system for county offices, the jail and district court. At their meeting Monday, commissioners said they were surprised that Curry bought the $66,000 system without consulting them and were surprised by the cost. They said that he should have taken the money out of the drug-seizure fund and not out of his department budget, which is in the taxpayer-supported general fund. For his part, Curry, who was appointed to the position last year, apologized for not telling the commissioners, saying he’s still learning his job as sheriff. However, Curry said he followed the county purchasing policy and said the old system wasn’t working and a new system was needed. Commissioners said they’ll schedule a meeting with Curry to discuss the purchase.
