WASHINGTON — A plan by the Republican majority in the U.S. House to cut a tax break for ethanol production and eliminate a biofuels program as cost-cutting measures has Democratic U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilack trying to put on the brakes. Eliminating the ethanol production tax credit is premature and will cost more jobs in the ethanol industry. The U.S. needs the biomass crops assistance program as a way to expand the use of other grains besides corn for biofuel.
