OTTAWA — County commissioners turned down a request Monday by a group of Centropolis-area residents to pave the 3700-3900 blocks of Indiana Road near Centropolis. The residents had submitted a petition to the county and offered to pay 40 percent of the costs. However, commissioners said the county doesn’t have the money. The cost to design, rebuild and pave the road is more than expected, county public works director Jim Haag. The county’s share would be about $101,874 and there’s a little more than $73,000 in the county fund used to pay for paving gravel roads, he said. The residents would be welcome to petition to pay the entire cost themselves, but Commission Chair Ed Taylor said he doubted that it would be worth it to them.
