GARNETT — The Garnett city commissioners have approved the first in a series of ordinances aimed at overhauling the city’s building and trade codes. City planning and codes director Andy Grye told commissioners that some of the city‘s codes were 20 years old. Neighboring cities use newer codes and updating Garnett’s codes will eliminate confusion, provide better safety and make it easier for city officials to get information whenever questions on the codes pop up, he said. Commissioners approved newer building, commercial, electrical and fire safety codes. More code updates are planned in future meetings. City manager Joyce Martin told the Anderson County Review that the update was prompted by a new $12 million elementary school planned for Garnett.
