EDGERTON — The Federal Highway Administration has extended the comment period for its environmental assessment for a proposed I-35 interchange for the controversial intermodal center at Edgerton. The agency said because of the public interest in the proposal, the comment period has been extended from this week to Feb. 22. The state wants to build a new interchange at Homestead Lane on I-35 between the cities of Gardner and Edgerton to better serve the proposed intermodal center. Burlington Northern Santa Fe plans to begin building a massive intermodal center and logistics park between Edgerton and Gardner this spring. The state plans to complete final design on the interchange this fall. The state has offered a grant to speed up construction of the center. However, the center is the target of federal lawsuits filed by neighbors and environmentalists.
