OTTAWA — On a split vote, county commissioners refused Wednesday to re-install additional guard rails along Vermont Road at the north end of the Marais des Cygnes River bridge near Rantoul.  County public works director Jim Haag said because the bridge was replaced and the Vermont Road approaches was rebuilt, the guard rails were no longer needed.  It would cost the county nearly $72,000 to re-install them, he said.  Commissioners David Hood and Don Stottlemire voted to re-install the guard rails.  Hood noted that he had a petition of more than 160 who wanted them re-installed.  Commissioners Ed Taylor, Steve Harris and Colton Waymire voted against, killing the proposal.
