OSAWATOMIE — A recent edition of the Kansas Historical Society’s “Reflections” magazine included a story headlined, “The Bridges of Miami County.” The article talked about the Creamery Bridge over the Marais des Cygnes River and the Pottawatomie Creek Bridge near Osawatomie. They were built in the early 1930s. The article said the bridges were two of eight triple-span rainbow-arch designs built in Kansas. Thanks to the bridges, Miami County has the most national register bridges in one county, the Osawatomie Journal reported. The bridges are still being used. They were built by Iowa engineer James Barney Marsh and the Marsh Engineering Company and 11 of his bridges in Kansas are on the National Register.
